HISTOIRE UNIVERSELLE, DEPUIS LE COMMENCEMENT DU MONDE JUSQU'A PRESENT; TRADUITE DE L'ANGLOIS D'UNE SOCIÉTÉ DE GENS DE LETTRES. L'HISTOIRE DE LA PRESQU'ISLE AU-DELA DU GANGE, SAVOIR DES ROYAUMES D'ASEM, DE TIPRA, D'ARRCAN, DE PEGU, D'AVA, DE JANGOMA, DE LAOS, DE SIAM, DE CAMBOJE, DE CHAMPA, DE LA COCHINCHINE, & DE TONQUIN. L'HISTOIRE DES TARTARES ORIENTAUX.

The nineteenth volume of the Histoire Universelle translated from the English is one of the most fascinating volumes in this monumental 44-volume encyclopaedic series. Published in 1762, it forms the fifth tome of the section devoted to Modern History and stands out for the breadth and exoticism of its subject matter: it encompasses the kingdoms of the peninsula this side of the Ganges — Deccan, Bisnagar, Golconda, the Malabar Coast, Madurai, Marava, Tanjore, Carnate and Ikkeri — then those of the peninsula beyond the Ganges, from Asem to Cochinchina and Tonkin, concluding with the history of the Eastern Tartars. This volume testifies to the truly universal ambition of the publishing enterprise: to integrate within a single narrative synthesis the history of civilisations as diverse as those of South India, Indochina and Central Asia. For European readers of the 18th century, these regions still belonged largely to the realm of the unknown or the marvellous, and this volume constituted a rare and precious window onto distant worlds, both geographically and culturally.

Why add it to your collection?

  • A volume of exceptional geographical and ethnographical richness, covering the entirety of South and Southeast Asia — from the Deccan to Cochinchina, from Siam to the Eastern Tartars — at a time when these regions remained largely unknown to Europeans
  • An irreplaceable document for understanding how the French Enlightenment perceived and described Asian kingdoms, their cultures, institutions and histories, midway between scholarship and Orientalist imagination
  • The fifth instalment of Modern History within the series, this volume illustrates the universalist ambition of the work, which sought to integrate the whole of Asia into a global vision of human history
  • Part of a 44-volume encyclopaedic set of remarkable rarity on today's market, particularly sought after by collectors specialising in Asian history and 18th-century Orientalism
  • A fine bibliophile object combining the typographic rigour of French Enlightenment publishing with content of remarkable originality and thematic density

Description

Context of the Series The Histoire Universelle is the considerably enriched French version of the Universal History published in London from 1736. The French translation and adaptation, the work of a society of men of letters some of whose members remain unidentified, appeared in 44 volumes between 1742 and 1802. The whole constitutes the most sweeping historical synthesis of the Enlightenment, seeking to encompass the history of all humanity, from its origins to modern times, across all continents.

Contents of Volume XIX This nineteenth volume is organised into three major geographical parts. The first is devoted to the kingdoms of the Indian peninsula this side of the Ganges: the Deccan, a Muslim sultanate whose power declined in the face of Mughal expansion; Bisnagar, the last great Hindu empire of the South; Golconda, famous for its diamond mines; the Malabar Coast with its spices that attracted the Portuguese; and finally the kingdoms of Madurai, Marava, Tanjore, Carnate and Ikkeri, political entities whose complex history is carefully traced here. The second part deals with the kingdoms of the peninsula beyond the Ganges: Asem, Tipra, Arakan, Pegu, Ava, Jangoma, Laos, Siam, Cambodia, Champa, Cochinchina and Tonkin — a succession of kingdoms whose history, dynasties and conflicts are presented in a dense and documented narrative. The third part finally addresses the history of the Eastern Tartars, nomadic peoples whose importance in Eurasian history was well understood by 18th-century scholars.

Sources and Method The authors draw on accounts by travellers, Jesuit missionaries, merchants and diplomats who had passed through these regions in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. This second-hand documentation, inevitable for such distant lands, is nonetheless treated with a critical rigour characteristic of the Enlightenment spirit. The result is a historical panorama of remarkable density, which today constitutes a precious document on how enlightened Europe imagined Asia.

Value for the Collector A particularly sought-after volume for its exceptional Asian content, this Volume XIX will appeal equally to generalist collectors of Enlightenment antiquarian books and to specialists in Asian history, Orientalism, or the history of cartography and historical geography.
