The Adventures of Telemachus, first published in 1699, constitutes one of the most influential texts of classical French literature. Written by François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai and tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, grandson of Louis XIV, this didactic work takes the form of a bildungsroman narrating the wanderings of Ulysses' son in search of his father. This 1844 edition, published by Belin-Leprieur in Paris, testifies to the work's enduring relevance in the 19th century, a period during which Telemachus remained an essential classic of French education. The work skillfully combines mythological narrative, political reflection and moral teaching, offering a veiled critique of absolutism and the reign of Louis XIV. Through its elegant style and philosophical scope, Telemachus profoundly influenced Enlightenment thought and continues to be considered an essential milestone in European pedagogical literature.

The Adventures of Telemachus were composed between 1693 and 1696 by Fénelon as part of his duties as tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, presumptive heir to the French throne. The work, initially intended for the young prince's private instruction, was published without the author's authorization in 1699, causing a scandal at court due to its implicit criticisms of Louis XIV's government. This 1844 edition by Belin-Leprieur is part of a long editorial tradition that saw Telemachus become an almost universal textbook in France and Europe.
The work consists of twenty-four books following the adventures of Telemachus, accompanied by his mentor Mentor (Athena in disguise), across the Mediterranean. The narrative borrows from Homer's Odyssey while developing an original reflection on good government, justice, temperance and the duties of a prince. Each stopover becomes an opportunity to examine different political and moral systems, from Crete to Egypt, from Tyre to utopian Boetica, thus offering a true treatise on political philosophy disguised as an epic.
Telemachus develops a subtle but firm critique of absolutism, court luxury and wars of conquest. Fénelon expounds his vision of a tempered monarchy, respectful of natural laws and the common good. These ideas, revolutionary for the time, nourished Enlightenment philosophy and helped shape 18th-century political debates. The work also advocates an education based on virtue, moderation and service to the public good.
This Parisian edition reflects the renewed interest in French classics during the July Monarchy. Belin-Leprieur, a reputable Parisian publisher, offers here an accessible text intended for both school use and bourgeois family libraries. The sober and elegant typographical presentation reflects the editorial standards of the Romantic era, a period during which Telemachus continued to be considered a model of French prose and an indispensable pedagogical tool.
