This 1862 French edition of Washington Irving's travel narrative constitutes a fascinating account of the American West on the eve of its transformation. Originally published in English as "A Tour on the Prairies" in 1835, this work recounts the author's expedition into the Indian territories of present-day Oklahoma in 1832. Irving, already famous for his fantastic tales, reveals himself here as a sensitive chronicler and perceptive observer of the American frontier. This French translation, published by the prestigious Mame publishing house in Tours, testifies to European interest in American exploration narratives during the Second Empire. The work captures a unique moment in American history, when the vast prairies remained largely unexplored by European settlers and Native American nations still maintained their traditional way of life. Irving describes with precision the fauna, flora, landscapes, and human encounters that marked his month-long journey.

Washington Irving (1783-1859) is one of the founding figures of American literature. After achieving success with "The Sketch Book" containing "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", Irving undertook a journey to the Western territories in 1832. At 49 years old, he accompanied an expedition of American rangers from Fort Gibson, in present-day Oklahoma, toward the prairies inhabited by the Osages and Pawnees. This journey would give birth to three major works, of which "A Tour on the Prairies" is the first.
The narrative meticulously describes daily life on an expedition through the American prairies of the 1830s. Irving recounts buffalo hunts, nights under the stars, encounters with various Native American tribes, and the dangers inherent in crossing these wild territories. His literary style, elegant and romantic, transforms ethnographic and naturalistic observations into captivating prose. The author captures the immensity of the landscapes, the strangeness of this virgin nature for a European, and the complexity of relations between settlers, military forces, and indigenous populations.
The Mame publishing house, established in Tours, was one of the most important French Catholic publishers of the 19th century. Their editions were distinguished by their printing quality and careful binding. This 1862 edition came during a period when American travel literature enjoyed considerable success in France, fueling the European imagination about the New World. The compact format and clear typography characteristic of Mame made these works accessible to a broad literate public.
Beyond its literary qualities, this work constitutes a historical document of primary importance. Irving describes a world in the process of disappearing: the great migrations westward had not yet transformed these territories, and Native American nations lived there according to their ancestral traditions. The descriptions of fauna and flora, observations on the customs of different tribes, and reflections on the future of these territories offer an irreplaceable testimony about pre-industrial America. For collectors, this French edition represents an important piece in the dissemination of American culture in Francophone Europe during the 19th century.
