Élisée Reclus's Nouvelle Géographie Universelle is one of the most ambitious intellectual enterprises of the 19th century. Published by the Librairie Hachette in 19 volumes between 1876 and 1894, this colossal work represents the synthesis of an entire life devoted to the study of the Earth and human societies. Élisée Reclus (1830–1905), geographer, traveller and anarchist thinker, deploys within it a vision at once scientific and humanist of the world, integrating physical, human, economic and political geography into a narrative of unprecedented scope. The volume devoted to Oceans and Oceanic Lands, published in 1889, deals with the maritime and insular spaces of the globe — Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic — as well as the archipelagos, islands and emergent lands that punctuate them. At a time when ocean exploration was still at its height and the great colonial powers were competing for the last available territories, this volume constituted a geographical synthesis of burning contemporary relevance. It remains today a reference document for the history of geography and marine sciences.
Why add it to your collection?
- A monumental volume from the greatest geographical work of the 19th century, written by Élisée Reclus, towering figure of modern geography and visionary anarchist thinker, whose work remains a universal reference
- The volume devoted to Oceans and Oceanic Lands is one of the rarest and most sought-after in the series, dealing with island and maritime territories that fascinated readers of the age of great explorations and colonisation
- A work abundantly illustrated with maps, engravings and geographical figures of remarkable precision and beauty for the period, constituting in itself a visual atlas of great documentary and aesthetic value
- An irreplaceable intellectual and scientific testimony to how the late 19th century conceived, described and classified the oceanic world, at the zenith of French positivist geography
- A centrepiece for any collection devoted to geography, natural sciences, the history of cartography or the social and political thought of the Belle Époque
